A Place Called Divide

Writing on Solitude led me to write this post about our search for a home.
After 20 years living in our Central, New York dream home with the meadow in front, it’s time for the Perrys to move on.

We’re putting our Freeville, NY, home on the market in March. Though we love our cedar shingle salt-box, we’re ready to downsize. Grey skies are getting old, and sunnier skies beckon.

Lately, I’ve been attracted to websites selling log type homes in Colorado, mostly in the tiny, rural community of Divide. Perched atop 9,165-foot Ute Pass,  it is named for the point at which the waters of the South Platte and Arkansas rivers separate. The 2010 Census had the population of Divide at 127.

Why not live in the city of Colorado Springs which makes tons more sense?  It is much more accessible, warmer, a vibrant city, close to our friends?

In Divide, there are spectacular views, and beautiful log homes with land which is  rare in the Springs and more the “norm” in Divide.  Ideally, we’d love a home with a renewable energy source, off the grid, that won’t cost half a million dollars!

But, mostly, what attracts us to Divide is the quiet!

I wonder if my new awareness of and appreciation for solitude and quiet is motivating me to look for our home in Divide?

It offers solitude and peace which Jon will find useful for painting and I for writing.  I also see this move as time for centering, calming and simplifying.

But, we’re considering some more basic questions.

What does God want for our future? In the past it seemed so simple to answer that question. We would jump right in to the hard place, to the needed place, the “next” place where we felt God drawing us…and it was usually very active and rewarding.

This hardly seems like God to us at all…Quiet and calm? God actually does know our “frame” (our bodies) and knew before we did that we were over extended and worn out. Duh!

But, God is also aware that I have to be cautious about isolating myself, which becomes a problem even in Ithaca during the winter months. Our kids are concerned that I will be lonely living in an isolated area.

We look forward to providing a place for friends from “Out East” and around the world to stay when they visit Colorado.  My mother’s family and we have always had a “Prophet’s Chamber” providing God’s workers a place for rest and restoration.

Will our friends want to visit us in up in Divide, Colorado?

Our need for Sabbatical taught us the cost of constantly stretching beyond our capacities. We’ve understood our need to establish better boundaries as we age together as a couple, rather than push, push, push ourselves ignoring our limits.

We’re resolved to listen more attentively to God’s voice in the quiet, instead of assuming we hear Him in the flurry of activity.

Do we have enough confidence and discipline to put into practice the lessons we’ve learned in the midst of all the needs that might be shouting our names? It seems easier to hear God’s voice on a quiet mountain top.

These are some of the issues we’re facing right now.  So, at this point it’s anybody’s guess, when our friends give us a call in Colorado, whether that guest room will be in Colorado Springs, an artist’s colony in Manitou Springs, or a place called Divide.
